Summary:
Element U.S. Space & Defense (EUSSD) is a premier provider of independent test and evaluation services to the US defense, aerospace, and space industries, including shock, vibration and mechanical testing, spread across our national network of six testing laboratories. Additionally, we offer unique testing that requires specialized test fixturing and equipment. We are seeking a Senior Design Engineer to drive fixture design and fabrication across the enterprise. The ideal candidate has design experience from concept, through evaluation and analysis, and fabrication using commercial design and analysis tools along with fundamental engineering principles.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Design and analysis of defense and aerospace test fixtures/tooling (primarily vibration and shock) using state of the art engineering software: SOLIDWORKS and Creo Parametric/Creo Advanced Simulation.
- Technical data package preparation consisting of drawings and specifications to industry standards.
- Project engineering to include test preparation, test fixture design/development, fabrication and failure analysis/corrective action resolution.
- Communicate design details and analysis results with test team and customers.
- Receive feedback from the test team and customer and incorporate into designs.
- Provide resource estimates and technical approach documentation to application engineers in support of preparation of bids and proposals, including marketing calls with potential customers to support technical discussions.
- Perform other duties as may be required
Minimum Qualifications:
- BS in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering or Physics.
- 7+ years relevant experience with mechanical design with knowledge of machining and fabrication methods, applications, and limitions to inform design concepts.
- 4+ years experience using SOLIDWORKS.
- Knowledge and experience in the use of GD&T principles.
- Experience with finite element analysis tools, particularly dynamic structural analysis (vibration and shock).
- Excellent people, written and verbal communication skills
- Extensive background check and US Citizenship will be required and must meet eligibility requirements for access to sensitive information
- Ability to work local to Fullerton, CA facility at least 3 days per week.
- Ability to travel up to 25% of the time.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Advanced degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering.
- 10+ years mechanical design experience, ideally design of tooling for vibration and shock fixtures.
- Experience with Creo Simulate, SolidWorks Simulation , and SolidWorks PDM.
- Experience with explicit FEA codes, especially LS-DYNA.
- Experience with testing of Defense or Aerospace components or products, specifically in the areas of dynamics and/or energetics preferred.
- Understanding Military & Aerospace compliance standards
- Ability to tolerate stress and work in a fast-paced environment
- Ability to work in a project team environment and share skills and knowledge with others.
- Excellent computer skills and experience with Microsoft Office Products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.)
- Experience with instrumentation, collection, and processing of dynamic test data (acceleration, force, pressure, strain, etc.).
