Position Summary:

Under general supervision, performs design functions to develop new or re-design existing products. Works from requirements or instructions to design and develop complex new components or redesign existing components to improve the organization's products. Determines and establishes specifications through engineering calculations and layouts. Makes changes to or modifies existing products. Selects components and materials, and is responsible for completing detailed drawings and accurate Bill of Materials, along all pertinent documentation as needed. Oversees the assembly and tests of engineering prototypes.

Essential Functions of the Job:

  • Assists Engineers department with design, Engineering change notices, data entry, BOM verification, purchased parts requisition, and testing.
  • Designs components and parts with SolidWorks and creates technical documentation to support manufacturing.
  • Ensures accuracy and strength of design. Drafts detail parts on computer ensuring accuracy of tolerances for proper fit-up of parts in assembly process.
  • May determine and select best components to be used on each product designed, based on required specifications. Uses product and vendor knowledge.
  • Writes instructions and procedures for processes and product changes.
  • Creates production drawings and prototype parts for design jobs with minimal supervision.
  • Ensures cost-effectiveness and product reliability by using existing parts and components to standardize new designs.
  • Sets-up part numbers for computer input using parts master sheet along with necessary information for costing of parts.
  • Sets-up and structures complete and accurate Bill of Materials (BOM) for each manufactured assembly.
  • Assists in overseeing assembly of prototypes. Checks fit-up accuracy of parts. Ensures implementation of product flows from design to actual production.
  • Assists in field testing new products and evaluating performance and structural integrity for approval or problem resolution. Makes changes as required.
  • May release Engineering Change Notices (ECN's) including all prints and respective BOM required for production upon approval of products.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSA's):

  • Knowledge of 3-D Design Modeling, design layouts, assembly drawings and/or component part drawings required.
  • Foundational Experience with SolidWorks, and knowledge of mechanical drawings. Familiarity with sheet metal and configuration tools.
  • Basic understanding of general industrial/automotive assembly and wiring practices, hardware, and sheet metal practices.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written. Able to write or speak technical instructions in layperson terms.
  • Knowledge of Bill of Materials, stress analysis, material selection and material sizing.
  • Able to plan, prioritize and organize.

Education and Experience:

  • 4-year degree in engineering or equivalent associate's degree with experience.
  • Minimum 3 years experience with SolidWorks, MS Windows and Office products.
  • Minimum 3 years experience with mechanical design
  • Familiarity with structural design and FEA experience.
  • Experience with engineering change processes preferred.

Working Conditions:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit or stand for prolonged periods.
  • Must be able to lift 35 pounds alone and greater than 35 pounds with assistance.
  • Must be able to wear required personal protective equipment while performing work in production environment.
  • Must be able to work overtime as needed to complete job assignments.
  • Minimal travel may be required.
