Mechanical Engineer (Professional Engineer Healthcare HVAC)
Job Description

This role is ideal for a seasoned Professional Mechanical Engineer who specializes in HVAC design for healthcare environments and enjoys leading complex, large-scale projects. You will design and oversee high-performance HVAC and plumbing systems for hospitals, clinical laboratories, and outpatient facilities, ensuring they meet rigorous safety, infection control, and regulatory standards. Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and engineering of HVAC and plumbing systems for hospitals, clinical laboratories, and outpatient healthcare facilities, ensuring compliance with safety, infection control, and applicable codes.
  • Plan, design, and deliver HVAC or plumbing systems from concept through construction documents with a high standard of quality and minimal guidance.
  • Develop and coordinate designs for industry-standard HVAC systems, including VAV systems, VRF systems, heat pumps, and packaged rooftop units.
  • Perform hydronic piping design, including pump selection, pipe sizing, and system layout to meet performance and efficiency requirements.
  • Design ductwork systems, including duct sizing and fan selection, to provide proper airflow, comfort, and energy efficiency.
  • Use heating and cooling load calculation software to size equipment and systems appropriately for healthcare and laboratory projects.
  • Produce plumbing designs, including layout, piping systems, and coordination with other building systems for complex projects.
  • Apply mechanical and plumbing building codes in the design of systems to ensure regulatory compliance and safety.
  • Write detailed specifications for mechanical projects, including HVAC and plumbing systems, equipment, and installation requirements.
  • Collaborate closely with peers, drafters, and other design disciplines to produce high-quality construction documents for large, complex projects.
  • Provide a high level of client service by responding to project needs, communicating clearly, and delivering reliable technical solutions.
  • Evaluate and compare HVAC and plumbing systems, considering advantages, disadvantages, costs, and efficiencies to recommend optimal solutions.
  • Leverage Autodesk MEP tools, AutoCAD, Bluebeam, and office productivity software to develop and coordinate design documents.
  • Support and mentor team members, contributing to the growth of the mechanical engineering team and helping to develop future leaders.
  • Act as a technical leader on healthcare and laboratory projects, contributing subject matter expertise in healthcare HVAC design.
  • Participate in internal and external coordination meetings to ensure that mechanical designs align with architectural and other engineering disciplines.
  • Contribute to a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement in design processes and project delivery.
Essential Skills
  • Bachelors degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering or a related field from an ABET-accredited program.
  • At least 10 years of job-related experience, including a minimum of 3 to 5 years focused specifically on large-scale healthcare or laboratory projects.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (PE), or the ability to obtain licensure by comity in the state where the hiring office is located.
  • Minimum of 10 years of HVAC or plumbing design experience, including leadership on complex projects.
  • Proficiency in the design of industry-standard HVAC systems such as VAV systems, VRF systems, heat pumps, and packaged rooftop systems.
  • Ability to independently design HVAC or plumbing systems from start to finish with a high standard of quality and minimal guidance.
  • Experience with hydronic piping design, including pump selection and system layout.
  • Experience with duct sizing and fan selection for HVAC systems.
  • Experience using heating and cooling load calculation software to size equipment and systems.
  • Experience with plumbing system design for building projects.
  • Knowledge and practical application of mechanical and plumbing building codes in design work.
  • Experience writing specifications for mechanical projects, including HVAC and plumbing systems.
  • Proficiency with Autodesk MEP tools and AutoCAD for mechanical design and documentation.
  • Proficiency with Bluebeam for document review and coordination.
  • Proficiency with Outlook and Microsoft Office for communication, documentation, and project coordination.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with peers, drafters, and other disciplines to produce coordinated construction documents.
  • Strong client service orientation with the ability to build and maintain professional relationships.
  • Comprehensive understanding of HVAC and plumbing systems, including their advantages, disadvantages, costs, and efficiencies.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • ASHRAE Healthcare Facility Design Professional (HFDP) certification.
  • LEED Accredited Professional (LEED AP) credential.
  • Certified Energy Manager (CEM) credential.
  • Experience with medical gas system design and plumbing coordination in healthcare facilities.
  • Demonstrated passion for growing and leading a mechanical engineering team.
  • Experience working on large, complex projects across multiple locations and markets.
  • Interest in innovative, responsible design solutions that positively impact building occupants and the broader community.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Boise, ID.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $45.67 - $52.88/hr.
