Designer / Drafter New Product Development
Job Description

The Designer/Drafter on the New Product Development team plays a key role in transforming initial concepts into fully realized product designs. You will work closely with engineers and cross-functional partners to take new products from idea through prototype, pilot, and into production. You create accurate, well-organized 2D and 3D models and documentation that align with industry standards and internal requirements, directly influencing product performance, manufacturability, cost, and overall project success.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the Lead Project Engineer and a team of engineers to translate product requirements into prototype and pilot designs.
  • Utilize 3D CAD software, such as PTC Creo, to develop robust digital models that support faster and more efficient development cycles.
  • Create detailed 3D models and engineering drawings based on concepts, sketches, or legacy designs with a strong focus on manufacturability and production feasibility.
  • Design sheet metal components using both 2D and 3D tools while ensuring appropriate tolerances and fit are achieved.
  • Recommend efficient assembly and fabrication methods that optimize designs for cost, quality, and ease of production.
  • Support technical and design reviews by preparing, presenting, or assisting in the presentation of design models and documentation in alignment with internal processes.
  • Prepare complete documentation packages for release to manufacturing, including drawings, bills of materials (BOMs), and machine files.
  • Interpret engineering sketches and technical specifications to develop accurate models and drawings.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional team members to ensure designs meet functional, electrical, and mechanical requirements.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of design practices, documentation standards, and development workflows within the New Product Development team.
Essential Skills
  • Approximately 8 years of experience developing and creating new products, preferably in the electro-mechanical or electrical-mechanical product space.
  • Strong proficiency in 3D CAD modeling, ideally including experience with PTC Creo.
  • Hands-on experience with both 2D and 3D modeling software for product design and documentation.
  • Solid understanding of mechanical design principles and new product development processes.
  • Strong understanding of Bill of Materials (BOM) preparation, structure, and ongoing management.
  • Ability to accurately interpret engineering sketches, drawings, and technical specifications.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes relevant to mechanical and electro-mechanical products.
  • Experience designing sheet metal components with appropriate tolerances and manufacturability in mind.
  • Ability to develop digital models that support rapid prototyping, pilot builds, and production release.
  • Attention to detail and commitment to creating accurate, well-organized engineering documentation.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience working on highly customizable products or systems, such as load banks or similar engineered-to-order solutions.
  • Familiarity with both electrical and mechanical aspects of product design and integration.
  • Experience preparing complete documentation packages for manufacturing, including drawings, BOMs, and machine or CNC files.
  • Comfort supporting and participating in technical and design reviews with engineering teams.
  • Ability to recommend and refine assembly and fabrication methods to improve cost and production efficiency.
  • Interest in contributing to a growing engineering team within a company experiencing strong product demand and increased sales.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment with a group of 10 or more engineers on projects that may range from 6 months to 2 years in duration.
Work Environment

You will work primarily in a recently opened engineering office located near the manufacturing facility, providing close access to the production floor. The team includes a dozen or more engineers who collaborate closely on new product development and highly customizable projects. Approximately 90% of your time will be spent at a desk using CAD and related engineering tools, while about 10% of your time will be spent on the manufacturing floor reviewing designs, observing builds, and collaborating with production personnel. The environment supports long-term projects, typically ranging from 6 months to 2 years, and offers the opportunity to contribute to a growing organization with a high-demand product line.
