Mechanical Engineer

  • Denver, Colorado
  • Full Time
Mechanical Engineer Oil & Gas Pipelines and Facilities

This role offers a blend of technical design and project facilitation, with approximately 30% of your time focused on detailed design work and 70% dedicated to reviewing designs, coordinating across disciplines, and supporting project execution. You will contribute to linear pipeline design and associated calculations, ensure compliance with applicable codes and standards, and support a diverse portfolio of natural gas pipelines, liquids pipelines, and related facility projects. The position provides clear growth paths into project management, people leadership, or technical subject-matter expertise within a large, well-established organization that offers strong benefits, professional development, and a hybrid work schedule.

Responsibilities

  • Review and perform linear pipeline designs and associated engineering calculations, including flow calculations, regulator sizing, and equipment sizing for natural gas and liquids pipeline systems.
  • Verify compliance with relevant codes, standards, and engineering best practices, and conduct quality checks on internal and external design deliverables.
  • Review manufacturers drawings and technical documentation to ensure alignment with project specifications and design intent.
  • Prepare procurement specifications and construction documents, including detailed material lists, technical requirements, and installation details.
  • Develop and support bid evaluations by reviewing contractor and vendor proposals, comparing technical offerings, and providing recommendations.
  • Perform conceptual design studies and support the development of project alternatives, including preliminary layouts and feasibility assessments.
  • Write clear, concise technical reports that document design decisions, calculations, project findings, and recommendations.
  • Select appropriate materials and equipment for pipelines and facilities, balancing technical requirements, code compliance, and constructability.
  • Observe construction activities in the field to verify conformance with design documents and provide engineering support to construction teams.
  • Participate actively in project meetings with internal teams, clients, contractors, and other stakeholders to discuss design, schedule, and technical issues.
  • Support project permitting activities by contributing to technical documentation, drawings, and responses to agency comments.
  • Perform site investigations to gather field data, assess existing conditions, and support design and permitting decisions.
  • Evaluate permitting requirements and environmental conditions, and contribute to determining appropriate project approaches and mitigation measures.
  • Interface with Federal, State, and local agencies, as well as community boards, to support project planning and approvals, as needed.
  • Use Microsoft Office and standard Power Market Sector design software such as PLS CAD, AutoCAD, Plant 3D, and AutoPipe to produce and review design documents.
  • Serve as a lead engineer on multi-disciplined natural gas pipeline, liquids pipeline, and facility projects, coordinating with other engineering disciplines and project stakeholders.
  • Mentor and guide less-experienced engineering staff on applicable design codes, standards, and design considerations for pipelines and facilities.
  • Support multiple utility clients and a variety of projects, adapting to changing priorities and maintaining high-quality deliverables.
  • Travel to project sites primarily within Colorado (approximately 20% travel) to support site investigations, construction observations, and stakeholder meetings.

Essential Skills

  • Bachelors degree in Engineering.
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or Professional Engineer (PE) licensure.
  • For PE candidates: experience with natural gas projects, preferably including midstream natural gas pipelines or facilities.
  • For EIT candidates: experience in oil and gas is preferred, but heavy industrial experience (such as water/wastewater, mining, or similar sectors) is also considered.
  • Experience with natural gas pipelines, including mainline systems and trenchless crossings, is preferred.
  • Experience executing projects within the Power Market Sector.
  • Ability to perform site investigations, including evaluating existing conditions, permitting requirements, and environmental considerations.
  • Ability to interface with Federal, State, and local agencies, as well as community boards, for project planning and approvals.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications for calculations, documentation, and communication.
  • Proficiency with standard Power Market Sector design software, such as PLS CAD, AutoCAD, Plant 3D, and AutoPipe.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical engineering principles as applied to pipelines and associated facilities.
  • Ability to conduct and review engineering calculations related to pipeline design, flow, regulator sizing, and equipment sizing.
  • Strong written communication skills for report writing, specifications, and technical correspondence.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to code and standard compliance and quality control.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Background in oil and gas, particularly in natural gas facilities and pipelines, is highly preferred.
  • Experience with midstream, upstream, or downstream oil and gas projects involving mechanical design is beneficial.
  • Experience with associated facilities such as metering and regulation stations, compression facilities, over-pressure protection systems, and storage facilities is advantageous.
  • Experience mentoring junior engineers or providing technical guidance within a project team is a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to work on diverse projects and support multiple utilities or clients concurrently.
  • Comfort working in a rapidly expanding program environment with a strong backlog of projects.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams and external stakeholders.
