This role provides technical leadership for the structural and civil design of transmission stations and related facilities by driving high-quality engineering solutions, design consistency, and adherence to standards, codes, and regulatory requirements. Responsibilities include developing and reviewing structural and civil designs, engineering calculations, specifications, and documentation; supporting constructability and coordination across project phases; and ensuring alignment with design intent, safety requirements, and organizational standards.

The role also supports engineering governance, quality assurance, and continuous improvement by leading peer reviews, contributing to the development of standards and tools, and identifying opportunities to enhance engineering practices. In addition, it provides technical guidance and mentorship to engineering staff, collaborates with internal teams, suppliers, and stakeholders, and supports risk identification, issue resolution, and decision-making to ensure effective and reliable project delivery.

Job Function:

For major and/or complex transformer, switching, frequency changer and condenser stations projects, and the switchyard features associated with generating stations, develop and provide technical oversight for "structural" designs, ensuring alignment with applicable standards, to achieve the concepts, layouts and requirements as specified for the project, exercising sound engineering judgment. Collaborate with all stakeholders in the various phases leading to final design, ensure coordination of various features to avoid design conflicts and support overall design integrity, provide technical guidance and supervise assisting staff as required. Examine contracts and equipment tenders to ensure they meet the intent of the structural and/or civil design.

Job Description:

  • Develop structural and/or civil designs for station projects and related facitlities to achieve the concepts, layouts, and requirements as specified for the project.
  • Collaborating with all concerned in the various phases leading to final design, preparing sketches, instructions, and other data as required for drawing production, and providing advice and guidance as required throughout
  • Examine concepts, equipment and material tenders, to verify that design, equipment, or agreement, meets the intent and requirements of the structural and/or civil design, collaborating with all concerned in changes necessary.
  • Attend to structural and/or civil design issues arising during field construction, including site visits as required to investigate and aid in the resolving of problems and implement design revisions as required.
  • Recommend the need for new or revised structural and/or civil design standards and assist in their development.
  • Act as a subject matter expert (SME) on assigned projects, supporting resolution of complex engineering challenges.
  • Periodically supervise staff assigned to assist on major or complex projects, attending to the assigning of work or areas of responsibility, providing advice and guidance where required, and ensuring accuracy and quality of output and performance. Assist with the development of engineering staff as required.
  • Act as a recognized design authority for complex, non-standard, or high-risk station designs, contributing to key technical decisions.
  • This job requires incumbents to possess their Professional Engineering Ontario (PEO) License (P.ENG License) and seal to approve engineering work done by themselves or others
  • Perform other duties as required.

Education:

  • Requires an engineering knowledge of the behaviour and design of steel structures, soil mechanics and foundations, concrete design, structural theory, mechanics of materials, and the applicable engineering mathematics.
  • This job requires incumbents to possess their Professional Engineering Ontario (PEO) License (P.ENG License) and seal to approve engineering work done by themselves or others
  • This knowledge is considered to be normally acquired through the completion of 4 years of University training (Grade XII plus 5 years) in an appropriate field such as Civil or Structural Engineering.

Experience:

  • Requires practical experience in the structural and civil design areas to fully gain familiarity with the practical approaches, methods, and techniques pertinent to station design projects, including an understanding of the interaction with electrical equipment, and the requirements for drawing production, standards, and practices.
  • Requires field experience to develop an understanding of construction methods, installation practices, and constructability considerations.
  • Requires progressive experience in the design field related to transformer, switching, frequency changer and condenser stations, working in all areas of station design to effectively perform in the "Specialist" capacity.
  • A period of eight to ten years or progressive experience in structural and/or civil engineering design is considered necessary to gain this experience.
