The Packaging Design & Testing Engineer will be responsible for designing innovative packaging components and systems for both new and existing products. This role blends creative design, manufacturing awareness, materials expertise, and project management. Essential Functions & Responsibilities of the Packaging Design & Testing Engineer:
Create packaging for new products using corrugate, paperboard, molded pulp, and related materials.
Develop designs involving poly bags, films, bottles, closures, and other packaging components.
Produce detailed 2D and 3D CAD drawings and specifications.
Apply industry test standards and customer-specific protocols.
Perform hands-on testing in the packaging laboratory.
Translate test requirements into design decisions and performance expectations.
Obtain ISTA CPLP certification within 90 days (company-funded).
Ensure designs reflect manufacturing capabilities and constraints.
Define functional, aesthetic, and performance attributes.
Establish tolerances for critical components and raw materials.
Produce drawings, prototypes, cost analyses, test reports, and BOMs.
Support new product development and sustaining engineering.
Build or procure prototypes for testing, market studies, and sales samples.
Provide material specs, manufacturing instructions, and packaging documentation.
Benchmark competitive packaging.
Explore new materials and design concepts.
Attend trade shows and visit suppliers to stay current with industry trends.
Occasional travel to suppliers and packaging trade shows.
Maintain strong communication with cross-functional teams.
Uphold consistent attendance and punctuality.
Perform additional duties as assigned.
BS in Packaging Engineering or related engineering field.
Alternate: MS in Packaging Engineering + 2-5 years of experience.
Required Experience of the Packaging Design & Testing Engineer:
5-10 years of packaging engineering experience.
BS or MS in Packaging Engineering or related engineering field
Strong background in lab testing and test protocol interpretation.
Fluent in 2D and 3D CAD design/drawing.
Proficient in MS Office.
Broad understanding of packaging materials (corrugate, paperboard, molded pulp, plastics).
Knowledge of packaging component manufacturing and production line processes.
Ability to read quotes, validate accuracy, and build costed BOMs.
Basic cost-estimating skills for corrugate and paperboard.
