Job Title: Mechanical Drafter
Job Description
This role is a hands-on mechanical drafting position supporting aerospace manufacturing operations. You will create and maintain 3D models, detailed manufacturing drawings, multi-level bills of material, and clear assembly instructions, with a strong focus on accuracy and manufacturability. You will work closely with engineering, manufacturing, and inventory control teams, frequently on the shop floor, to verify parts, review manufacturing kits, and resolve issues before and during production.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with the engineering team to generate and maintain accurate 3D models using SolidWorks.
- Create detailed manufacturing drawings, including appropriate GD&T, to support aerospace production requirements.
- Develop and maintain complete multi-level, indentured Bills of Material (BOMs) for complex assemblies.
- Enter, structure, and manage engineering data within an MRP or ERP system, including SyteLine.
- Structure assemblies using proper indentured parts models within the MRP system to ensure accurate configurations.
- Create clear, concise assembly instructions that support efficient and repeatable manufacturing processes.
- Support Engineering Change Orders (ECOs) and drawing revisions, ensuring documentation is updated and controlled.
- Work directly with manufacturing and inventory control teams to review manufacturing kits and ensure completeness.
- Identify missing, incorrect, or obsolete components in kits and BOMs and help drive corrective actions.
- Validate parts against drawings and BOMs on the shop floor to ensure alignment between design and production.
- Support first article builds and ongoing production builds by resolving drafting, documentation, and configuration issues.
- Apply knowledge of machining, plastic injection molding, fabrication, and assembly processes to produce manufacturable designs.
- Ensure documentation accuracy and maintain high standards of detail and clarity in all drawings and models.
- Interface with technicians on the shop floor to gather labor and process data and support continuous improvement.
Essential Skills
- 2-5 years of experience creating 3D models and detailed drawings in SolidWorks.
- Strong working knowledge of SolidWorks for mechanical and electro-mechanical components and assemblies.
- Experience generating and maintaining multi-level, indentured BOMs in an MRP or ERP system.
- Hands-on manufacturing operations experience in an electro-mechanical or mechanical environment.
- Ability to read and interpret aerospace drawings and specifications.
- Understanding of manufacturing processes, including machining, plastic injection molding, fabrication, and assembly.
- Experience supporting Engineering Change Orders (ECOs) and managing drawing revisions.
- Familiarity with structured MRP or ERP environments, including entering and maintaining engineering data.
- Working knowledge of GD&T and its application to production drawings.
- Strong attention to detail and a high level of documentation accuracy.
- Ability to work effectively on the shop floor, verifying parts, reviewing kits, and resolving production issues.
- Capability to frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience with SyteLine MRP is preferred.
- Exposure to AS9100 or aerospace quality standards.
- Background in mechanical design, mechanical engineering, tooling, or electro-mechanical assemblies.
- Experience with rotary switches or similar aerospace components.
- Familiarity with creating and maintaining multi-level BOMs specifically for aerospace or highly regulated industries.
- Comfort working with change orders and configuration control processes in an engineering environment.
- Strong collaboration skills and the ability to communicate effectively with engineers, technicians, and production staff.
Work Environment
You will work in an aerospace manufacturing environment focused on large projects involving rotary switches and electro-mechanical assemblies. The team is small and collaborative, including an engineering manager, a mechanical engineer, a manufacturing engineer, and a drafter, offering close interaction and direct access to decision-makers. The role is hands-on and shop-floor oriented, requiring frequent interaction with technicians and production staff, as well as gathering labor and process data. You will use SolidWorks and an MRP/ERP system (such as SyteLine) as core tools, along with standard office and engineering software. The position is hourly and based in a production facility where you will regularly move between office and manufacturing areas. The environment requires the ability to frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally up to 25 pounds. Dress expectations align with a professional manufacturing setting, where appropriate safety and shop-floor attire are required when working in production areas.
