Job Summary:
The Mechanical Engineer will function as a mechanical designer of space-borne scientific instrumentation and associated equipment/hardware optimizing electronic packaging solutions and ensuring the entire flight instrument design, reliability, performance, and compliance with industry standards for externally funded projects at the William. B. Hanson Center for Space Sciences at UT Dallas.

Minimum Education and Experience:
Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
3 years of experience to include mechanical design and electronic packaging, principles of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing, and finite element analysis ( FEA ) for structural and thermal analysis.
Experience using CAD , SolidWorks, ANSYS Mechanical, and ANSYS Workbench software applications.

Preferred Education and Experience:

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Collaborate with a small team of engineers and research scientists to develop and design electronic packaging solutions for space flight scientific instruments, considering factors such as size, mass, induced inertial forces, thermal management, and EMI shielding.
  • Utilize CAD software (SolidWorks) to create detailed 3D models and 2D drawings of components and assemblies.
  • Apply geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) principles to ensure precise component manufacturing and assembly.
  • Conduct tolerance stack-up analysis to verify that design specifications are met.
  • Select appropriate materials for compatibility with space flight requirements.
  • Oversee material testing and qualification processes.
  • Ensure designs adhere to space flight industry standards and regulations ( NASA )
  • Environmental testing; write procedures, witness, and act as technical liaison with external testing facilities.
  • Analyze and optimize thermal solutions within the instrument to ensure components operate within specified temperature ranges.
  • Conduct thermal simulations and testing as needed.
  • Willingness to assemble scientific instruments for space flight as needed.
  • Maintain comprehensive documentation of designs, specifications, and test results.
  • Prepare technical reports and presentations to communicate progress and findings.
