Overview
We are seeking a Manufacturing Automation & Controls Engineer to support and drive manufacturing excellence initiatives within a highly automated production environment. This role partners closely with engineering, operations, maintenance, and production teams to enhance process performance, improve reliability, reduce costs, and eliminate waste.
This position reports to the Process Improvement Engineering Manager and plays a key role in advancing continuous improvement efforts across the facility.
Key Responsibilities
Maintain and validate control system architecture for both new and existing equipment
Support equipment commissioning, startups, and planned maintenance outages
Troubleshoot and resolve issues related to control systems and electrical components
Partner with maintenance and operations teams on root cause analysis and corrective actions
Implement controlled updates and improvements to PLCs, HMIs, and higher-level control systems
Collaborate with vendors, engineers, and production teams to drive continuous improvement initiatives
Develop project scopes, timelines, and cost estimates for assigned initiatives
Create and maintain technical documentation, including manuals, drawings, and spare parts lists
Promote lean manufacturing principles and a right-first-time mindset across operations
Analyze performance data, identify gaps, and lead improvement efforts to meet operational targets
Support data-driven decision-making through analysis, visualization, and reporting
Standardize processes and ensure effective change management practices
Ensure compliance with all safety, environmental, and quality standards
Work Environment
This role is split between office and plant floor responsibilities (approximately 50/50). The manufacturing environment includes exposure to industrial equipment and machinery.
Physical Requirements
Regular use of computers and standard office equipment
Ability to stand, walk, climb, and work around industrial equipment
Occasional bending, kneeling, or reaching
Visual requirements include close vision, depth perception, and focus adjustment
Qualifications
Education:
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering preferred
Degrees in Computer Engineering or Mechanical Engineering (with automation/robotics focus) may be considered with relevant experience
Experience:
2-5 years of experience in electrical or automation engineering
Exposure to PLCs, HMIs, or distributed control systems (industry or academic)
Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities
Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools
Excellent communication and organizational skills
Ability to manage multiple priorities and work effectively in a team environment
Preferred Experience:
Experience in a heavy industrial or manufacturing environment
Knowledge of database tools and data analysis techniques
Programming experience (Python preferred)
Familiarity with CMMS platforms (e.g., Maximo)
Understanding of electrical systems, including AC/DC motors and electrical codes
