Job Description

Job Title: Process Modeling Engineer

100% onsite in Corning, NY

Possible conversion, but no guarantee or timeframe commitment.

Non local candidates who are willing to relocate at their own expense are welcome.

Interview Process: Initial teams meeting with manager. 2nd interview will be several hour panel teams meeting where candidate will give presentation. If candidate is within a few hours driving distance from Corning, candidate will come onsite for 2nd interview.

This posting was previously released as JP29142. There are 3 core changes between that posting and this new posting: First, the manager added more detailed requirements and expectations regarding the candidate's background in solid mechanics, so it's clearer what Corning looking for in this area. Second, experience with open-source finite element analysis software is now listed as a desired qualification rather than a mandatory requirement. Third, expertise in thin film mechanics is also presented as a desirable skill instead of a hard requirement.

Purpose of the Position:

As a Process Modeling Engineer, Scientist/Engineer, you will model new processes and/or process conditions to improve product attributes and reduce costs for glass and/or ceramic substrates and filters. You will develop modeling and analytical tools, and you will also leverage existing tools, to build a fundamental understanding of underlying principles. This role requires a strong foundation in solid mechanics and deep expertise in numerical modeling, along with excellent communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with globally distributed researchers, engineers in our commercial organizations, and customers.

Day to Day Responsibilities:

Model new processes and process conditions to improve product performance and reduce costs for glass and/or ceramic substrates and filters.

Develop and apply analytical and numerical models (e.g., solid mechanics-based simulations) to build fundamental understanding of process and material behavior.

Communicate results clearly and collaborate effectively with a globally distributed team of researchers and engineers, as well as commercial partners and customers.

Job Duties:

Use solid mechanics (analytical methods and FEA/BEM) to predict and mitigate thermo-mechanical stress, deformation/warpage, residual stress in glass/ceramic components.

Build transient thermal-stress models of process cycles (heating/cooling) to quantify stress evolution and identify robust process windows.

Simulate contact, fixturing, and handling to reduce local overstress, damage risk, and dimensional variability.

Evaluate thin film/coating stresses and interfacial delamination risk to inform layer design and processing conditions.

Provide mentorship and recommendations on new capabilities and method development related to mechanical testing and measurements.

Engage with the businesses, as needed, to address customer questions and support product engineering problem solving.

Write technical reports, invention disclosures, and publications.

Required Years and Area of Experience:

M.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related discipline with 4+ years of experience in a similar field OR Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related discipline with 0+ years of experience

Travel Requirements:

Flexibility is required; up to 10% travel.

Required Skills:

Experience with finite element analysis (FEA) software (commercial and/or open-source).

Good knowledge of the mechanical behavior of soft materials (e.g., gels, polymers).

Ability to analyze problems and reduce them to mathematical models; design and carry out experiments to validate models; derive numerical/technology solutions; and make recommendations.

Strong mathematical and programming skills supporting FEA and boundary element method (BEM) modeling using commercial software packages (e.g., Abaqus, Ansys).

Desired Skills:

Experience with structural thin film mechanics while focusing on material modeling and characterization.

Experience with process and product engineering

Knowledge of a range of materials test techniques.

Ability to lead product performance data evaluations, experiments, and data analysis with cross-functional partners.

Soft Skills:

Strong verbal and written communication skills, including effective presentation skills.

Proven ability to work across multiple cultures on a globally dispersed and diverse team.

Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects concurrently and prioritize effectively.

Strong analytical and problem-solving skills demonstrated through resolving product and/or process issues.
