Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

Purpose of Position

Responsible for the generation and release of successful engineering designs of enclosures for outdoor and indoor optical networks. Duties include following a product release process to develop concepts and detailed designs, deliver proofs of concept, conduct experiments, evaluate prototypes, define test plans, create design engineering documents, and define product and process specifications.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conceptualize mechanical design solutions for new development and improvement projects, keeping both performance and cost targets in mind.
  • Create mechanical designs of plastic injection molded and sheet metal components to meet a set of functional requirements.
  • Provide high-level and detailed 3D CAD models and 2D drawings suitable for:
    • Concept presentation to customers
    • Analytical evaluation (modeling)
    • Patent applications
    • Technical reports or publications
    • Cost or manufacturability analysis
  • Research externally published fundamentals, new designs (competitor products and patents), and manufacturing processes.
  • Lead the projects from a technical standpoint, representing the design engineering perspective which may include delegating tasks to other technical resources like CAD design, prototyping labs, and testing & qualification labs.
  • Follow a prescribed product development process with adaptation to the projects specific needs.
  • Collaborate with project team members from multiple technical disciplines located in various domestic and global locations to translate design concepts into detailed designs that can be prototyped and manufactured.
  • Work remotely with Manufacturing personnel to release new products at full-scale production.
  • Provide documentation to communicate findings in technical reports, protect intellectual property in patent applications, order rapid prototypes, and/or support customer presentations and demonstrations.
Experiences/Education - Required

Degree Requirement

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering. Major in Mechanical preferred. ElectroMechanics, Mechatronics or Optical will be considered.

Work Experience

  • 0 to 3 years of Industry Related Experience (Product, Design, New Product Introduction), including new graduates.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand and solve challenging technical problems.
  • Product Development and/or NPI experience is desirable.
  • Experience designing injection molded and/or sheet metal parts desirable.
  • Sound understanding of material properties, manufacturing capabilities, and their application in product design.

  • Strong verbal and written English communication skills.

  • Ability to balance multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.
  • Proficient in CAD software-Creo, Solidworks, and NX (Creo preferred).
  • Proficient in the use of MS Office (Excel, Word, Project, PowerPoint)

The range for this position is $66,155.00 - $90,964.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education. The benefits available for this position are dependent on hours worked and may include medical, dental, vision, 401(k) plan, pension plan, life insurance coverage, disability benefits, and PTO.
