Mechanical Engineer Astoria, New York City
Position Summary:
For over 170 years, Steinway & Sons has set the standard in piano manufacturing. The Steinway & Sons mechanical engineering team is key to driving new product design, development, and documentation efforts across all Steinway piano products. We are currently seeking a talented mechanical design engineer to join our team and contribute to the evolution of the piano in Steinway's iconic New York factory.
Main Responsibilities:
Assist in the design and drafting of piano cabinet structures, mechanical systems, and components using CAD software (Siemens NX).
Support the creation, maintenance, and revision of engineering drawings, 3D models, and material specifications.
Become familiar with Steinway's structural analysis approach and piano design principles.
Collaborate with manufacturing and engineering teams to develop parts, tools, fixtures, and assemblies for production.
Support prototyping, testing, and analysis of materials and equipment to validate design performance.
Contribute to the creation, maintenance and improvement of the engineering database for Steinway Custom and Bespoke Pianos.
Help resolve day-to-day production challenges and assist in identifying improvements or quality concerns.
Assist with design and testing of customer-specific requests and service-related engineering needs.
Communicate and collaborate with engineers and cross-functional team members to implement procedures and provide technical information.
Prepare engineering documentation and participate in basic project tracking and planning.
Support quality and reliability testing and contribute to the development of new testing procedures as assigned.
Requirements
Qualifications, education and experience:
BS in Mechanical Engineering
2+ years' experience in a mechanical design engineering role
Engineering fundamentals: Statics, Material Science, Solid Mechanics, Statistical Tolerance Analysis
Knowledge of basic manufacturing processes such as machining, casting, sheet metal forming, injection molding, etc.
Strong project management skills and comfortability working with internal and external clients
The ability to read and interpret technical drawings, schematics, and computer-generated reports
Experience drafting and interpreting engineering drawings
Proficiency in 3D CAD Modeling Software (Siemens NX preferred)
Good planning and organizational skills
Prior woodworking experience preferred
Flexibility to travel occasionally
The estimated annualized base salary range for this role is $75,000 - $90,000. Compensation will vary based on skills and experience.
