2009998 Job Description SUMMARY:  Contributes to the development of new product designs as a member of a cross-functional team that result in the launch of complex electro-mechanical devices and related dressing kits for advanced wound care products that meet defined business needs.  The senior engineer will create and manage the CAD models and drawings for product concepts as well as finished products.  The mechanical design engineer will lead design analyses, prototyping and testing, and will have experience in the design and manufacturing of plastic parts. ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:   Design and Development Provide planning input for design, engineering and development activities Establish product design objectives and design requirements that are clear and measurable Generate product concepts and alternative design approaches Works with external industrial design partners to assure presentation of workable concepts Create mechanical designs and 3D models for product concepts, components, and assemblies Apply DFM/DFA concepts in developing design solutions Generate drawings and other specifications for components and finished products Prepare and present information for technical design reviews as required in the design control process. Specify materials and required characteristics of parts and assemblies Perform complex tolerance analysis and validation Evaluate designs for safety, manufacturability, failure modes, customer usage and function Participate in the design verification and validation process, including the development and implementation of test protocols related to product performance Works with Procurement to identify and qualify suppliers of custom materials Responsible for reliability engineering of the mechanical portion of design Responsible for coordinating serviceability portion of design   Plastic Part Design Apply good manufacturing practice for design of plastic injection molded parts, castings and other high cost tool formed components Work with molders and toolmakers to refine part design and to optimize performance and manufacturability Perform non-linear FEA and mold flow analysis to evaluate plastic part design and to identify and resolve potential manufacturing issues Identify and select appropriate rapid prototyping materials and processes to fabricate parts/components representative of injection molded parts for use in development assessments Review and analyze First Article Inspections and confirm that critical to quality characteristics and critical to function dimensions and tolerances have been met     Regulatory Standards Compliance Perform all activities in compliance with relevant Quality Systems Standards. Identify relevant regulatory and compliance standards applicable for the product being developed. Comply with relevant QS standards to implement design control and change control procedures at Smith & Nephew and with external development partners. Oversee the preparation of documentation, using good documentation practices, suitable for inclusion in the product design history file and for transfer to manufacturing. Apply high standards of Occupational Health and Safety in the workplace to comply with company policy and procedures   Required Skills CRITICAL SKILLS REQUIRED: Experience in identifying and selecting polymers for engineering applications Experience in dimensioning plastic parts consistent with standard molding practices Knowledge of Injection mold design and application to plastic part design Prepare and present technical overviews of product design details to broad audiences consisting of technical and non-technical management personnel.
